What You NEED To Know!
Ontario Marriage Certificates
Now that you're married, you may be checking the mail for your Ontario Marriage Certificate. Unless you've applied for this, 3 months after your wedding, I'm here to tell you that it's not going to happen (the Marriage Registrar sets a minimum 3 month waiting period, before applying for it). Applications submitted prior to 3 months after your wedding will NOT help you. That will only complicate and delay the entire process.
This is a separate process from getting your marriage licence or registering your marriage. It's not mandatory, however, it's the only accepted document for proof of your marriage, your Record of Solemnization of a Marriage won't cut it. When you do apply for your certificate, you may opt to apply for it on line. Using the online application, you'll receive your Ontario Certificate of Marriage more quickly.
Bottom line, all going well, plan on a 4 month delay, from the time you get married until you have this document in hand. Plan accordingly!

A Word About Marriage Licences
Marriage licences must be used within 90 days from when they're issued. They expire after 90 days, rendering them void and useless. A new marriage licence will then be required. There are no refunds. I recommend couples get their marriage licences 4 - 6 weeks before their marriage. Make sure you take all the required documents with you. If you've been divorced, you'll need your "certificate of divorce" as well. Without all the necessary documents present, no licence will be issued. On the other hand, having all required documents, with you, makes your trip to the Clerk's office speedier. Check all spelling and dates before leaving the Clerk's office. Errors can and do happen. You'll leave with your licence in hand.

Don't have your Certificate of Divorce yet? What's stopping you? A certificate of Divorce is not the same as the court document that has granted the divorce. These are 2 distinct documents. You need to apply for a Certificate of Divorce, separately, after your divorce has been granted. You get them from the court that granted the divorce. Get it well ahead of time. They don't have an expiration date on them. Sometimes, there are complications in getting them. You don't want to get stuck planning a wedding, putting down deposits and then not being able to get a marriage licence because you don't have a proper Certificate of Divorce. No marriage licence, no ceremony, no refunds.
